Microplastics Found in Most Heart Attack Patients: What a New Study Reveals

A new study published in the European Heart Journal has uncovered a striking connection between cardiovascular health and environmental pollution: micro- and nanoplastics were detected in the blood of nearly 84% of patients suffering from active, severe heart attacks.


Led by Dr. Raffaele Marfella at the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli in Naples, Italy, researchers analyzed blood samples drawn directly from the coronary arteries of 61 patients undergoing angiograms. What they found highlights an emerging frontier in heart health research—though experts caution there is still much to learn.


The Key Findings

The study compared blood samples across three patient groups with varying levels of heart disease:

  • Polyethylene Dominance: Among patients who tested positive for plastic particles, 97% had traces of polyethylene—the lightweight plastic most commonly used in single-use shopping bags, food wrap, and disposable water bottles.

  • The Smoking Factor: A history of smoking emerged as the single strongest predictor of detectable plastic particles in the blood.



Correlation, Not Causation

While the numbers are eye-opening, health experts urge caution in how we interpret the results.


"While these findings are interesting and highlight the importance of paying attention to environmental factors that may contribute to inflammation and blood vessel injury, they do not prove that plastics cause heart attacks," explains Michelle Routhenstein, a preventive cardiology dietitian who reviewed the findings.

The study has several key limitations to keep in mind:

  1. Observational Design: It establishes an association between higher microplastic levels and severe heart events, but it cannot prove direct cause-and-effect.

  2. Small Sample Size: The study observed 61 patients from a single regional medical center in Italy, meaning the findings can't yet be generalized worldwide.
